HARRISBURG, PA – Celebrity heart surgeon and television talk show host Mehmet Oz is the official winner of the tight race for the Pennsylvania Senate GOP Primary after his opponent, Dave McCormick, officially conceded at a campaign event Friday night.
Oz, who was officially endorsed by former President Donald Trump, will now go on to the 2022 midterm election where he will square off against his Democratic challenger, John Fetterman, with the winner to replace retiring Republican Senator Pat Toomey. Fetterman has served as Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania since 2019, and is currently recovering from a stroke he suffered in mid-May.
The result of the contest between Oz and Fetterman will go towards significantly shaping the political landscape in the state of the country, with both Republicans and Democrats fighting hard to overcome the current 50-50 split they possess in the U.S. Senate and solidify their power.
Previously, the May 17 Pennsylvania primary concluded with Oz enjoying a razor-thin lead of less than 1,000 votes, automatically triggering a mandated-by-law recount in the event of a 0.5 percent or less margin between the two top finishers.
With Oz coming out on top of the recount, McCormick finally conceded the race on Friday, telling his supporters that the celebrity doctor now had his full support going forward.
“It’s now clear to me with the recount largely complete, that we have a nominee,” McCormick said. “And today I called Mehmet Oz to congratulate him on his victory. And I told him, what I always said to you, that I will do my part to try to unite Republicans and Pennsylvanians behind his candidacy.”
Oz called McCormick “gracious” in his concession, and said that he appreciated having his support in the upcoming election this fall.
“We share the goal of a brighter future for Pennsylvania and America,” Oz said. “Now that our primary is over, we will make sure that this U.S. Senate seat does not fall into the hands of the radical left, led by John Fetterman. I look forward to campaigning in every corner of the Commonwealth for the next five months to earn the support of every Pennsylvanian.”
Trump’s successful endorsement of Oz has raised his already-impressive batting average when it comes to backing winners in the Republican Party, which currently resides at 93 percent for the 2022 primaries; this represents the influence that Trump still manages to wield among conservatives, despite no longer being in the White House.
