RIAU, INDONESIA – Serving as a reminder that wild animals can be just that – wild – a new viral video depicts a scary encounter between a guest at a zoo who made the stupid decision to jump over a safety fence for a photo op, and an orangutan that was apparently having a bad day decided to take it out on anyone within reach.

The incident took place at the Kasang Kulim Zoo in the Riau province of Indonesia. The video begins after the victim – Hasanal Arifin, 19 – had already circumvented a fence in order to get up-close and personal for a photo with an orangutan; he quickly discovers how bad that idea was when the powerful primate reaches out from his barred enclosure and seizes the man’s white t-shirt.

Just prior to the primate grabbing him, Arifin could be seen reaching out towards the cage, as if he were taunting the animal.

Once the orangutan gets a hold of his shirt, Arifin immediately begins to panic, crying “No! No!” as a bystander runs over and attempts to pull him from the beast’s grasp; what follows is a tug-of-war of sorts, until the orangutan decides to up the ante by releasing the victim’s shirt and grabs a hold of his leg with both arms.

The bystander attempts to kick the orangutan to no avail, as the animal begins pulling harder on Arifin’s leg with not only his hands, but a foot as well; he can be heard screaming in pain and fear at this point.

Eventually, Arifin is pulled free of the orangutan’s grasp; he was then immediately thrown out of the zoo and reprimanded by staff.

It is not currently known if Arifin sustained any injuries, but it is hoped that he learned a valuable lesson that day: don’t do blatantly stupid things at the zoo, such as making a monkey out of yourself by jumping over safety barriers and into an animal enclosure for a selfie.
