PHOENIX, AZ – A former NFL running back that is running for Congress in Arizona on the Republican ticket has released an eyebrow-raising campaign commercial depicting him defending his home from “Democrats in Klan hoods” while wielding an AR-15.
Jerone Davison – who played for the Sacramento Gold Miners in 1994 and for the Oakland Raiders from 1996 to 1997 – is currently vying for Arizona’s competitive 4th congressional district in the November 2022 election.
Playing up his belief in the Second Amendment, Davison posted a 30-second video ad on Twitter on Wednesday with the caption “Make Rifles Great Again.”
In the video, robed and hooded members of the Ku Klux Klan – depicted with donkey symbols on their robes – are shown storming a home while armed with barbed wire-covered baseball bats, axes, clubs, and gardening tools. A sunglasses-wearing Davison then emerges from the home with an AR-15 rifle with an extended clip in his hand, and after a brief standoff the Klansmen quickly turn tail and run off.
“Democrats like to say that no one needs an AR-15 for self-defense. That no one could possibly need all 30 rounds,” the narrator of the commercial says. “But when this rifle is the only thing standing between your family and a dozen angry Democrats in Klan hoods, you just might need that semi-automatic, and all 30 rounds. The commercial ends with one of the Klansmen’s hoods floating in what appears to be a water-filled fountain.
Davison’s divisive campaign ad comes amid the ongoing debate over gun control in the United States, following several recent high-profile mass shootings involving suspects using assault-style rifles, including a Uvalde, Texas elementary school slaughter in May that left 19 children and two adults dead and a Highland Park, Illinois Fourth of July parade shooting that claimed the lives of 7 people and left at least 30 injured.
