WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), regular critic and verbal sparring partner of White House medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, declared during an interview this week that he intends to subpoena and compel the infectious disease expert to testify under oath regarding the COVID-19 pandemic if the GOP manages to retake Congress in the November 2022 midterm elections.
The two have repeated clashed during numerous hearings held over the course of the pandemic, with the Kentucky senator accusing the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – the federal organization that Fauci heads up – of funding “gain-of-function” research at a laboratory in Wuhan, China, the suspected location of the initial COVID-19 outbreak in 2019.
While being interviewed on Fox News’ “America Reports” on Wednesday, Paul issued a warning to Fauci that, if Republicans do manage to wrest control of the House from Democrats, he intends to get to the bottom of COVID – and whether or not its origins were obscured as part of an elaborate covered-up – one way or another.
“I think it’s very good news for the truth. If he’s going to stick around, we’ll wait to see if it happens. But if he’s in public employment, we will subpoena him,” he said, referencing Fauci’s recent denial concerning rumors of his impending retirement.
“He will have to appear and testify under oath. If Republicans take charge of the House or the Senate or both, he will have to testify under oath because a million Americans died. And we want to know about was there a cover-up in trying to suppress any link to the lab in China?”
“I do fully believe this virus, this pandemic that killed 6 million people around the world, leaked from the lab,” Paul continued. “But I think there was a concerted effort by him and his colleagues to cover this up and make sure it didn’t come to light, that the NIH was funding that lab and that there was reasonable scientific evidence that suggests that it came from the lab. So he’s going to be made to testify under oath. And I hope he sticks around because we do have some questions.”
