SYDNEY, OH – A doorbell camera caught the chilling scene as an Ohio man fatally shot his daughter’s unhinged ex-boyfriend through the front door of his residence as the young man was attempting to break in.
This week, a grand jury decided not to indict Mitchell Duckro with any crimes in connection with the shooting death of James Rayl, 22, as he repeatedly attempted to batter his way into his Sydney, Ohio home in an attempt to contact Duckro’s daughter, Allyson, who had broken up with him over 18 months prior.
On the evening before the shooting, Rayl had left a voicemail on Allyson Duckro’s phone, and then showed up at her home the next morning at approximately 11 a.m. Footage from the doorbell security camera shows Rayl ringing the doorbell and then waiting several minutes before ringing it a second time.
After no one answers, Rayl opens the outer door and then begins pulling on the handle of the home’s main door. Duckro and other members of his family can be heard telling Rayl to leave the property, but the youth disregards the warning and begins repeatedly ramming his shoulder into the door; at this point, Duckro warns him that “I’ve got a gun.”
Rayl continued to ignore Duckro’s warnings, and upon breaking the deadbolt and forcing the door open several inches, Duckro opens fire three times, striking the home invader in both shoulders and the back. Rayl then stumbles away from the door and towards the home’s driveway before falling to the ground; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a released recording of the 911 call, Allyson Duckro was reportedly heard telling her father “Dad, there’s nothing you could have done, you saved my life.”
A Shelby County grand jury declined to charge Duckro in Rayl’s fatal shooting, noting Ohio’s “Stand Your Ground” and “Castle Doctrine” laws that allow individuals to utilize deadly force if threatened, especially within their own homes.
