Lakeland, Florida, a convicted murderer found himself in legal trouble once again. Jarrett Garrett McCabe, a 47-year-old with a history of violent offenses, was arrested after an altercation at his son’s bus stop.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that McCabe was taken into custody following an incident where he assaulted a 16-year-old boy. The incident came to light when a DoorDash driver witnessed McCabe hitting the teenager in Lakeland.
The genesis of this shocking event began when McCabe learned from a neighbor that his son had been involved in altercations with two boys a few weeks prior. Investigators later discovered that McCabe’s son had indeed engaged in fights with the boys, but he had not jumped, as previously believed.
In response to the information he received, McCabe decided to take matters into his own hands. He went to the bus stop and asked if the two boys would confront his son again. Instead of waiting for a confrontation, McCabe confronted the teenagers as soon as they disembarked from the bus.
According to McCabe’s statement to detectives, he admitted to slapping one of the boys with an open hand across the face. However, witnesses at the scene contradicted this claim, stating that McCabe had punched the boy in the face and struck him twice in the stomach.
The teenager who McCabe allegedly assaulted was one of the individuals involved in the earlier altercations with McCabe’s son. The other teenager was present when the adult struck the boy.
Convicted Murderer Arrested for Bus Stop Assault
Following the incident, McCabe was arrested and charged with simple assault. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd expressed understanding of a father’s concern for his son but condemned McCabe’s actions, stating, “Waiting at a bus stop to beat up a kid is not the kind of example you want to be setting for your child.” Sheriff Judd also highlighted that McCabe’s criminal history, coupled with this incident, suggested serious anger management issues.
Jarrett Garrett McCabe’s criminal history is indeed profoundly troubling. He has prior convictions for second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, and shooting/throwing a deadly missile into a building or vehicle.
Having served six years and 11 months in a Florida state prison, McCabe’s arrest in this recent incident raises concerns about his propensity for violence and the potential threat he poses to the community.
