India surpassed China to take the top spot on the list of foreign graduate students visiting the US in the academic year 2022–2023.

For the very first time since 2009–10, Indian students outranked their Chinese counterparts in admission to US universities.

According to the report, which was released on Monday, there were 268,923 international students enrolled in US universities in the academic year 2022–2023—an all-time high—a 35 percent increase from the previous year.

This achievement also signifies a notable change in the demographics of foreign students enrolled in US universities.

Over the course of the last ten years, India’s share has doubled, from 12% in 2012–13 to 25% in 2022–23.

This puts it just two percentage points behind China’s current share of 27%. China accounted for 31% of the share ten years ago.

At present, over 25 percent of the one million international students studying in the US are Indian students.

In twenty-four US states—including Texas, Michigan, and Illinois—where international students are most frequently drawn, the number of Indian students now surpasses that of Chinese students.

India surpassed China to take the top spot on the list of foreign graduate students visiting the US in the academic year 2022–2023.

In accordance with Open Doors Report (ODR) data, India topped the list of countries with the most people (69,062) pursuing optional practical training (OPT), a kind of temporary work permit that enables qualified students to gain practical experience in an area related to their degree.

Surprisingly, ODR data shows that China saw a 0.2% decline in the number of foreign students studying in the US during the 2022–2023 academic year.

Despite this, China’s share of students studying abroad remains slightly higher than India’s, with slightly over 2.89 lakh students studying in the US overall.
