Law Enforcement Alerts Parents to Apple’s Latest iOS 17 Feature. How Worried Should You Be?

Law enforcement agencies, including those in central Virginia, are alerting the public about the new iPhone feature in the latest iOS update called “NameDrop.”

This feature enables users to transfer contact information by placing two phones on top of each other, sharing contact cards between devices. 

While some parents and officers express concerns about potential misuse of personal information, a local safety expert deems the risk to be very low.

Cliff Lent, a safety consultant as well as former police officer, works for M7 Solutions. He claims that the primary problem with the new feature is that it is activated automatically when you update your phone, which can be inconvenient if you are not aware of it.

He claims that the risk of strangers obtaining your personal information via name drop is low, however if you want to eliminate that risk entirely, you can turn it off.

‘NameDrop,’ like AirDrop, allows you to exchange information with other Apple devices with no needing someone’s phone number or email address.

Both tools can be disabled on your device, which means you can decline requests to avoid receiving anything you don’t want on your phone.

The feature requests permission before sending or sharing a contact card, but confusion can arise when you attempt to cancel that action.

When you connect the two phones, the only options are ‘Receive Only’ and ‘Share,’ with no cancel button. To cancel the action, the phone must be locked or moved away from the other device.

If owners are concerned about the risk of personal information being exposed, they can disable NameDrop completely. 

They can go to settings, general, AirDrop, and Bringing Devices Together, and then toggle the screen dot to “off.”
