As California braces for the winter holiday season, health officials are sounding alarms about a concerning resurgence in both COVID-19 and flu cases across the state. 

The upward trend, while expected during the colder months, raises fears as vaccine uptake lags, leaving vulnerable populations at risk of preventable severe health complications.

Recent figures depict a worrying scenario. Over the week ending December 9, 2,449 Californians were newly hospitalized due to COVID-19, marking a 40% increase in a month, as per federal data. 

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classified California as having a high level of viral illness activity by December 9, indicating one of the nation’s most concerning situations.

The CDC issued a bulletin, highlighting the rapid surge in respiratory illnesses nationwide, warning of potentially millions falling ill in the coming months. The agency stressed that low vaccination rates significantly elevate the risk of severe disease, emphasizing the critical need for immediate vaccination to curb hospitalizations and save lives.

Dr. Mandy Cohen, CDC director, underscored the persistence of COVID-19 as the primary cause of respiratory hospitalizations and fatalities nationally, resulting in approximately 1,000 deaths weekly. 

Despite hopes to relegate COVID-19 to the past, Cohen emphasized the necessity of continued vigilance and adherence to preventive measures.

Cohen reiterated essential precautions such as vaccination, avoiding contact with sick individuals, staying home when unwell, regular hand hygiene, optimizing air circulation, and mask-wearing. She stressed the importance of early testing and treatment to avert severe illness and hospitalization.

While flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) haven’t reached the peaks observed last year, their resurgence, especially in the wake of the winter season, triggers concerns.
