In downtown Austin, Texas, a tragic incident Saturday night led to the death of an armed suspect and injuries to three bystanders, sparking an investigation.

Amidst the vibrant scene on East 6th Street in Austin’s entertainment district, chaos erupted just before midnight when three police officers responded to a disturbance call outside a bar.

Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson revealed that officers were alerted to a man attempting to enter a bar with a firearm. Upon arrival, officers confronted the suspect, who then aimed his weapon toward both the officers and innocent bystanders.

In response to the imminent threat, three Texas Police Department officers discharged their firearms at the suspect, resulting in the assailant sustaining multiple gunshot wounds and later being pronounced deceased.

Fortunately, none of the officers suffered injuries, but three bystanders were harmed during the shooting, with one in critical condition and taken to a hospital.

Details regarding the injuries sustained by the bystanders remained unclear, and an investigation is underway to ascertain if they were hit by gunfire or incurred injuries by other means.

Henderson confirmed that the officer’s body-worn camera footage capturing the incident would be released to the public within 10 business days, in line with departmental policy.

While the suspect’s identity has not been disclosed, the three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty pending investigations, as per standard protocol.

These officers, with a tenure ranging from nine to 13 years in the Texas Police Department, are cooperating with inquiries conducted by the Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.

Furthermore, an ongoing investigation conducted internally within the police department remains in progress.

The incident follows a separate shooting at Barton Creek Square Mall earlier in the day, where an argument escalated into gunfire, causing minor injuries to an adult, who was promptly hospitalized. As of Sunday, there have been no announced arrests related to the mall shooting, and the Texas investigation is still ongoing.
