A tragic case unfolded in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, as 40-year-old Trinh T. Nguyen pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the horrific murder of her two sons in May 2022.
The mother was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and additional charges related to the disturbing incident that shocked the community.
Nguyen took the lives of her 9-year-old son Nelson and 13-year-old son Jeffrey by shooting them in the head while they slept in their Upper Makefield Township home.
The boys were initially placed on life support at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia but succumbed to their injuries on May 6, leading to upgraded charges from attempted homicide to first-degree murder.
In a harrowing turn of events, Nguyen also attempted to shoot a neighbor, but her gun jammed, preventing further tragedy. She was sentenced by a judge to two life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders and a maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years for the attempted murder of her neighbor.
Discovery of Evidence in Pennsylvania
First Assistant District Attorney Jen Schorn stated that the negotiated plea and sentence were designed to ensure that Nguyen spent the remainder of her life behind bars. The plea agreement comes after Nguyen’s failed attempt to take her neighbor’s life before ultimately turning the gun on her sons.
The incident unfolded when officers from the Upper Makefield Police Department responded to Timber Ridge Road following reports of Nguyen’s violent actions.
The neighbor from Pennsylvania told police that she gave him a box of pictures intended for her ex-husband and then attempted to shoot him twice. Luckily, he disarmed her and stopped more damage from occurring.
Nguyen was found later at the United Methodist Church in Washington’s Crossing, parked in a white Toyota minivan. Upon her arrest, investigators discovered disturbing details, including a note in the vehicle that read, Please call 911! My children are dead in their bed at 119 Timber Ridge Road 18490.
Investigators in Pennsylvania found evidence that suggested Nguyen had planned the killings for at least a week beforehand. In a handwritten will, she blamed others for her troubles, including her impending eviction from her home, and left instructions for the handling of her and her boys’ corpses.
