Donald Trump Jr., son of former President Donald Trump, found himself in a web of contradictions as his latest conspiracy theory about the Jan. 6 Capitol attack quickly unraveled.
On Thursday, Trump Jr. dismissed the events as a fake insurrection and accused federal authorities of acting as tour guides within the Capitol. President Joe Biden’s campaign wasted no time in countering Trump Jr.’s claims.
They swiftly released a fact-check, presenting screenshots of text messages exchanged between Trump Jr. and then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows during the chaos of the Capitol breach.
In these messages, Trump Jr. urged Meadows to have his father condemn the situation, emphasizing the need for an Oval Office address as the situation had escalated beyond control.
The irony lies in the fact that Trump Jr. himself acknowledged the severity of the situation on Jan. 6, contradicting his recent characterization of it as a fake insurrection. His plea to Meadows underscores the urgency he felt, recognizing the need for immediate action to address the unfolding crisis.
Adding further complexity to Trump Jr.’s narrative, he asserted on Thursday that the rioters on Jan. 6 were unarmed.
Unraveling Trump Jr.’s Conspiracy Theory
However, the House committee investigating the attack found evidence to the contrary. Many of Trump’s supporters were armed during the incident, as revealed in the committee’s findings.
Notably, Trump Jr.’s dismissive stance on the presence of weapons contradicts his past indifference, as reported by witness Cassidy Hutchinson, who served as Meadows’ assistant. Trump Jr. allegedly stated, “I don’t care that they have weapons. They’re not here to hurt me.”
The revelation that Trump wanted to allow armed supporters into his rally nearby, and even instructed the Secret Service to remove metal detectors, adds another layer of contradiction to his narrative.
His assertion that these supporters could then proceed to march to the Capitol, as recounted by Hutchinson, complicates the image Trump Jr. is attempting to portray.
In essence, Trump Jr.’s latest conspiracy theory faces scrutiny and unraveling not only from external sources but also from his own contradictory statements and actions on that fateful day in January.
