Mark Zuckerberg, the visionary CEO of Meta, has set his sights on a groundbreaking venture in the world of artificial intelligence (AI). 

Zuckerberg recently unveiled plans for Meta to acquire a staggering 350,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, a move intended to propel the development of a next-generation AI that boasts human-like intelligence.

Zuckerberg envisions the AGI as the driving force behind an array of cutting-edge services and devices, including more powerful digital assistants and augmented reality glasses. 

In a video shared on Instagram, he emphasized the necessity of advancing every aspect of AI to achieve these goals. The strategic acquisition of Nvidia’s H100, an enterprise GPU known for its proficiency in training large language models, is crucial to this ambitious undertaking.

The scale of Meta’s GPU procurement is awe-inspiring. By the end of the year, the company aims to possess approximately 350,000 Nvidia H100s, translating to an estimated $10.5 billion investment. 

Priced at approximately $30,000 per, the H100 adds significantly to the load both monetarily and in terms of electrical expenditures for running this computing armament. This action reveals the intense rivalry between top tech firms in their quest to create cutting-edge artificial intelligence models. 

Research firm Omdia suggests that other tech giants, such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, likely acquired between 50,000 to 150,000 Nvidia H100s last year. 

Zuckerberg, in his Instagram post, hinted at the immediate use of these GPUs to train Llama 3, Meta’s response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology. Crucially, Meta plans to share the fruits of its AI endeavors with the broader community. 

Zuckerberg highlighted the company’s commitment to open-sourcing their AI models, similar to their approach with Llama 2. In his words, “This technology is so important and the opportunities are so great that we should open source and make it as widely available as we responsibly can.” 

This commitment to openness underscores Meta’s belief in the transformative potential of AI and its dedication to driving progress in the field.
