Former Trump administration official Mike Gill, who was shot during a carjacking spree in Washington, DC, on Monday, passed away on Saturday, as confirmed by his wife, Kristina Gill.
Gill, who had served in the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission under the Trump administration, fell victim to violence associated with the carjacking incidents, which also claimed the life of another individual.
Kristina Gill bemoaned, “His sudden departure has left a void in our lives that can never be filled,” citing her husband’s many roles as a dedicated husband, a member of the church, a mentor to colleagues, a volunteer on the District of Columbia Board of Elections, and a coach to his daughter’s soccer team.
As senior vice president of capital markets at the Housing Policy Council, Gill was deeply committed to his work, aiming to enhance the lives of others.
The council conveyed deep sadness regarding his premature passing, acknowledging it as a considerable tragedy and a loss of great significance.
Gill Family Spokesperson Unveils Tragic Beginnings
Erica Richardson, a spokesperson for the Gill family, disclosed details of the shooting, which unfolded on Monday afternoon according to Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department.
The violence commenced when an unidentified assailant shot a male driver in a car before fleeing the scene. Gill’s family confirmed that he was the victim in this incident.
The chaos unfolded rapidly, involving a Jeep Grand Cherokee within a span of about three minutes. The perpetrator attempted to steal a Mercedes-Benz but was unsuccessful. In a subsequent encounter, the attacker fatally shot Alberto Vasquez Jr., 35, before absconding with a stolen Chrysler 200.
The following day, the assailant fired at a cruiser on Interstate 295, causing damage to the vehicle. Identified as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham, he was later fatally shot by police in New Carrollton, Maryland, after being found with two handguns.
Cunningham was also linked to two other carjacking incidents in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Fortunately, no officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
