The Republican candidate for governor of North Carolina, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, has sparked controversy by urging the resuscitation of a bathroom bill” that targets transgender people.

During a recent speech, Robinson advocated for transgender people who use women’s restrooms to be detained and to find a corner outdoors.

Robinson’s contentious remarks, in which he pledged to protect women in this state by prosecuting those who use restrooms that correspond with their gender identification, were recorded in videos from campaign rallies.

Robinson’s opponents in the Republican nomination race have not directly addressed or condemned his anti-trans remarks. However, they have criticized him for other bigoted statements, including comments dismissing the Holocaust and making demeaning remarks about women.

Bill Graham’s campaign spokesman, Alex Baltzegar, asserted that Robinson’s divisive rhetoric could harm the GOP’s chances in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive approach.

The Republican candidate for governor of North Carolina, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, has sparked controversy by urging the resuscitation of a bathroom bill” that targets transgender people.

State Treasurer Dale Folwell, another GOP candidate for governor, echoed Robinson’s transphobia, emphasizing the need for women to use women’s bathrooms exclusively. He suggested that if legislative adjustments were necessary, they should be pursued through the appropriate channels.

While Folwell expressed support for enforcing existing laws, he did not explicitly condemn Robinson’s remarks.

Robinson has a history of making controversial anti-LGBTQ+ comments, branding discussions about transgenderism and homosexuality as filth during a church speech in June 2021. In subsequent appearances, he equated LGBTQ+ individuals with undesirable elements and expressed discriminatory views about same-sex couples.

As Robinson’s anti-trans comments gain attention, the Republican primary race for governor in North Carolina becomes increasingly contentious. His stance on transgender rights reflects a broader pattern of discriminatory rhetoric, prompting concerns about the potential impact on the GOP’s electoral prospects.
