A new state legislation that went into effect on Sunday requires businesses all throughout New York to give customers clear price information when using credit cards.
Under this consumer protection measure, stores are prohibited from simply warning customers of potential credit card surcharges through signs on doors or at registers.
Instead, they must clearly display the credit card price alongside a lower cash price, or alternatively, adopt a universal pricing scheme where all customers pay the credit card price.
Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat who endorsed the law late last year, emphasized the importance of shielding consumers from hidden credit card fees. In a statement, she expressed confidence that the legislation would prevent unexpected surcharges, fostering trust between businesses and their customers.
Notably, the law does not extend to debit card transactions. Additionally, it imposes limitations on credit card surcharges, capping them at the actual cost incurred by businesses from processing companies.
New York City Partnership Endorses Legislation
The Partnership for New York City, a nonprofit organization representing businesses, offered its endorsement of the legislation, asserting that such transparency would enhance consumer confidence and ultimately benefit all parties involved.
By mandating clear disclosure of credit card pricing, the law aims to empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions while holding businesses accountable for fair pricing practices.
