The NBA faced criticism as Patrick Beverley of the Milwaukee Bucks defended Coach Doc Rivers against remarks by former player JJ Redick, now an ESPN analyst.
Redick, who played under Rivers during his tenure with the LA Clippers from 2013-17, took to First Take to unleash a barrage of criticism, accusing Rivers of constantly making excuses and lacking accountability.
Redick’s primary source of dissatisfaction stemmed from Rivers openly expressing his disappointment regarding the level of effort displayed by players from the Milwaukee Bucks.
Beverley, currently under Rivers on the Bucks roster, didn’t take kindly to Redick’s comments. In a fiery response on social media, Beverley reminded Redick that it was Doc Rivers who saved his career, starting him when no one else was willing to do so.
The implication seemed to be that Rivers played a pivotal role in Redick’s career, especially during his transition to the Clippers, where he saw significant playing time.
Patrick Beverley’s Defense
However, Redick disagreed with Patrick Beverley’s interpretation of the situation. He responded by saying he had a four-year deal with a player option that would ensure him a starting spot and the same salary with a different team. It was rejected that Rivers kept Redick’s career intact.
The underlying tension between Redick and Rivers is not a new development. Redick has previously taken shots at Rivers, and this latest exchange only adds fuel to the fire. Rivers, a coach known for both loyalty and accusations of playing favorites, has a divided opinion among his former players.
While Beverley staunchly defends him, others, including Redick and members of the Lob City Clippers, feel that Rivers may not have been as accountable as they’d hoped.
As the verbal sparring continues, the NBA community remains captivated by the drama unfolding between a current player and a former player turned analyst, showcasing the intricacies of relationships within the league.
