San Jose Sharks Open for Business: Mike Grier Ready for Trade Deadline Overhaul

The San Jose Sharks seem poised for a major shakeup as the NHL trade deadline approaches, with General Manager Mike Grier reportedly open to a full-scale fire sale by March 8. 

According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Grier is fielding calls and considering substantial moves to reshape the team.

While some teams have inquired about star players like Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl, their contracts and injury concerns make significant trades unlikely. 

Instead, the focus is expected to be on San Jose’s second- and third-tier players, including Mario Ferraro, Anthony Duclair, Mikael Granlund, Mike Hoffman, Alexander Barabanov, Luke Kunin, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Kaapo Kahkonen, Kevin Labanc, and Jan Rutta.

While individually these players may not fetch high returns, collectively, they could contribute to a significant overhaul for the Sharks. 

The ability to retain salary for at least one outgoing player adds to San Jose’s flexibility, potentially leading to a considerable influx of prospects and draft picks. As for what the Sharks are seeking in return, head coach David Quinn reportedly desires more size in the lineup. 

San Jose Sharks at a Crossroads

Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now suggests that San Jose may target defenseman Tyler Myers from the Vancouver Canucks. Myers, tied for the tallest defenseman in the NHL this season, could bring the desired size, but complications arise from his modified no-trade clause.

In terms of offensive alternatives, the available choices might seem restricted, yet there exists a particularly intriguing avenue involving Elmer Soderblom, a promising prospect within the Detroit Red Wings organization.

The Red Wings, who recently positioned themselves as deadline buyers, could be willing to part with the 22-year-old for the right return. Soderblom, standing at the same height as Myers, has displayed promise, tallying six goals and 19 points in 41 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins this season.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Sharks find themselves at a crossroads, exploring avenues to revamp their roster and potentially set the stage for a new era in San Jose hockey.
