NBA Shuts Down Knicks’ Protest on Contentious Game Against Rockets

The New York Knicks’ hopes of overturning their narrow 105-103 loss to the Houston Rockets were dashed when the NBA denied their protest. 

The controversy stemmed from a late-game foul call on Jalen Brunson, leading to two decisive free throws for the Rockets’ Aaron Holiday. However, officials admitted the call was made in error, as Brunson had not made contact with Holiday during his desperate three-point attempt.

Despite the acknowledged mistake, the NBA upheld its ruling, citing the need for a demonstration of a misapplication of the official playing rules rather than an error in judgment by the game officials. 

Consequently, the Knicks’ protest was deemed insufficient to warrant an extraordinary remedy, such as replaying an overtime period. This decision maintains the NBA’s streak of not upholding protests since 2008, when a similar error occurred involving Shaquille O’Neal. 

NBA Announcement Amid Controversial Calls

The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat recreated the last seconds of a game on that particular occasion, but Atlanta won in the end.

Historically, successful protests in the NBA are rare occurrences, with the last one before 2008 dating back to 1982, when the San Antonio Spurs were granted a replay of the final moments of a game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Although the ruling may seem costly for the Knicks, who face a $10,000 fee for filing the protest, the NBA’s decision emphasizes the fallibility of referees and the inherent unpredictability of officiating in sports.

Interestingly, the league’s announcement coincided with a victory for the Knicks following a missed foul call in a previous game, highlighting the subjective nature of officiating decisions and the potential for outcomes to even out over time.

Ultimately, while the denial of the Knicks’ protest may be disappointing for the team and its fans, it underscores the league’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its rules and procedures, even in the face of controversial officiating decisions.
