Former NBA player Scot Pollard reached a significant milestone in his recovery journey on Thursday, as he left the hospital nearly two weeks after undergoing a heart transplant. 

The 48-year-old, who enjoyed an 11-season career in the NBA, including winning a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008, rang the bell at the Vanderbilt Transplant Center in Nashville, Tennessee, to applause from hospital staff who lined up to witness the emotional moment.

Pollard’s journey to this point has been marked by challenges and uncertainty. Three weeks ago, he was admitted to Vanderbilt’s intensive care unit due to a condition exacerbated by a genetic disorder affecting his heart. 

Despite undergoing a multitude of treatments, ranging from medications to the installation of a pacemaker, Pollard’s medical condition persisted without improvement. This challenging situation compelled the medical team to initiate a search for a compatible donor heart to address Pollard’s ongoing health issues.

The search was complicated by Scot Pollard’s stature standing at 6 feet 11 inches and weighing 260 pounds, doctors needed to find a donor heart large and strong enough to support him. 

Thankfully, on February 16, Pollard’s wife Dawn shared the news on social media that doctors had found a donor heart that was a “perfect fit,” expressing gratitude to the donor for their life-saving gift.

Since the transplant, Dawn has kept Pollard’s supporters updated on his progress, sharing videos of him moving and walking after the procedure. The successful surgery marks a turning point in Pollard’s health journey, offering hope for his future.

Pollard’s resilience and positive spirit throughout his recovery have been evident. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained determined to overcome them, demonstrating the same tenacity that characterized his basketball career.
