Vikings Eye Trey Lance Trade: Draft Pick on the Table

301

In a significant move last August, the Dallas Cowboys surprised the football community by securing quarterback Trey Lance, who was the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, through a trade.

Presently, there is speculation circulating that Dallas might engage in another trade involving Lance, this time potentially with the Minnesota Vikings, a team facing urgent quarterback needs.

This rumor has been attributed to Rich Eisen, a seasoned NFL figure and prominent personality on the NFL Network.

Eisen does not claim authorship of the rumor, but rather mentions it as a topic of discussion he encountered during the recent Scouting Combine.

Trey Lance: The Vikings’ Quarterback Hope?

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – NOVEMBER 30: Quarterback Trey Lance #15 of the Dallas Cowboys warms up prior to the game against the Seattle Seahawks at AT&T Stadium on November 30, 2023 in Arlington, Texas.

That largely hinges on the extent to which the Minnesota Vikings favor Trey Lance over other prospects available in the 2024 draft class or in free agency.

However, given Kirk Cousins’ contract situation and minimal indications of Minnesota’s intent to extend his tenure, a transition to a new era of quarterbacks seems imminent.

With only Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall currently under contract, the outlook for the quarterback position on the existing roster appears bleak.

While Trey Lance has already amassed three years of experience in the NFL, his age may not align with conventional perceptions of a long-term investment.

However, it’s important to recognize that Lance will only be 24 years old come May.

In fact, he is slightly younger than current top quarterback prospects such as Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. from the present draft class.

Is Lance Still a Catch for Other Teams?

The primary concern revolves around whether Lance, who was released by the San Francisco 49ers after two years and did not attempt a pass for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, still holds appeal to other teams.

One factor that might sway the Minnesota Vikings in Lance’s favor is his upbringing in Minnesota, although he played college football for North Dakota State.

Nonetheless, such personal connections can often bolster a player’s rapport with local fans.

The Cowboys would undoubtedly find it advantageous to explore the option of trading Trey Lance for a draft pick.

If they were to secure a Day 2 pick for him, as suggested by Eisen, it would represent a significant return on the investment made when they traded a fourth-round pick to San Francisco.

Additionally, trading Lance would eliminate his salary cap impact for the 2024 season, thereby freeing up approximately $5.3 million in cap space.

Moreover, Dallas currently has Cooper Rush under contract for another year, providing further stability at the quarterback position.
