Philadelphia Eagles Reject Tampering Accusations Regarding Saquon Barkley
The Philadelphia Eagles have refuted any suggestion of unauthorized communication between general manager Howie Roseman and running back Saquon Barkley during the pre-free agency negotiation period.
Barkley, hailing from Pennsylvania and an alumnus of Penn State University, reached an agreement with the Eagles on a three-year contract worth $37.75 million, with $26 million being fully guaranteed upon signing.
Eagles’ GM Accused of Direct Talks with Saquon Barkley
Allegations surfaced after Barkley’s former coach at Penn State, James Franklin, implied that Roseman engaged in direct conversation with Barkley during the “legal tampering” phase, which is prohibited by league regulations.
During the negotiating window, it is prohibited for teams to engage in direct communication with players unless the player acts as their own representative.
A representative from the Eagles affirmed that all recruitment efforts by the team are conducted exclusively through the player’s agent.
The NFL declined to provide any comment regarding potential unauthorized contact investigations.
Furthermore, an Eagles spokesperson mentioned being uninformed about any correspondence from the league to the team on this matter as of Wednesday evening.
Giants Remain Silent on League Contact
According to an undisclosed source, the New York Giants have refrained from initiating contact with the league regarding the issue.
Barkley, aged 27, has been a standout performer for the Giants throughout the past six seasons, having been drafted as the second overall pick in 2018.
During this time, he has amassed over 7,300 all-purpose yards and 47 touchdowns.
As a two-time Pro Bowler, Barkley recorded 962 rushing yards in 14 games during the previous season.
Although the Giants applied the franchise tag to Barkley last offseason, they opted not to do so this year.
As per the same source, the Giants did not extend a contract offer to Barkley during this offseason.
Additionally, aside from the Eagles, the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans were identified as the two teams exhibiting the most significant interest in acquiring Barkley.
