Kyle Pitts’ Comical Demand: Kirk Cousins’ Jersey Number Switch Revealed
With the arrival of quarterback Kirk Cousins poised to lead the Atlanta Falcons in 2024, there is a possibility that tight end Kyle Pitts will consider changing his jersey number.
Cousins, who recently inked a $180 million deal during the NFL free agency period, will be joining the Falcons.
Despite having worn jersey number 8 since 2014, the 35-year-old quarterback may need to discuss a jersey number alteration with his new primary tight end, Pitts, who currently possesses that number.
Kirk Cousins’ Generosity: Offering Charity for No. 8
Pitts reached out to Cousins regarding the possibility of wearing the No. 8 jersey.
Cousins expressed his willingness to be a cooperative teammate, indicating that if Pitts truly desires to retain the number, he should do so, as reported by James Palmer of NFL Network.
Furthermore, Cousins mentioned that he wouldn’t simply take the number from Pitts; if he were to acquire it, he would pledge to donate to a charity or any cause that Pitts desires.
Pitts humorously suggested that all he might ask for in return are more opportunities to be targeted during games.
Cousins Eyeing No. 12: Jersey Swap Ahead?
Option No. 12 remains under consideration for Kirk Cousins.
Although previously worn by wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge during his time in Atlanta, Hodge is currently unsigned as a free agent for the 2024 season, potentially leaving the number available for the incoming quarterback.
Cousins’ association with jersey No. 12 dates back to his tenure in Washington, where he was initially assigned the number as a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.
He retained No. 12 for two seasons before transitioning to No. 8, a number he had previously worn during his collegiate years at Michigan State and in high school.
As for Kyle Pitts, he is currently listed as the holder of No. 8, but Cousins cannot formally join the Falcons’ roster until Wednesday.
Pitts’ social media activity suggests a willingness to potentially change numbers for the upcoming 2024 season.
The tight end added to speculation by sharing a photo of himself wearing No. 84 during his time at the University of Florida.
In instances where a significant jersey swap is being considered, the player seeking the number typically offers compensation, either through direct payment or a charitable donation.
With Cousins’ substantial $100 million guaranteed contract with the Falcons, he is well-equipped to provide compensation for the desired No. 8 jersey.
Consequently, it is probable that he will secure the number if he so desires.
