In the overtime period of their March Madness game against Texas A&M on Sunday in Memphis, the Houston basketball team was down to its last man on the bench.
With 18 seconds remaining in overtime, Houston All-American Jamal Shead fouled out with the team leading 98-95. He was the fourth player for the Cougars to foul out. Coach Kelvin Sampson then went to Ryan Elvin, a senior who doesn’t get used much, as a walk-on.
This season, he has not played longer than six minutes in a game and has only attempted four free throws.
However, Elvin gave the Cougars the breathing distance they required to overcome Texas A&M’s upset bid, and they prevailed 100-95 to go to the Sweet 16. With 17 seconds left, he made his second free throw, making it a 99-95 lead after missing his first.
Almost every member of the Cougar team was completely certain that Elvin would succeed.
Ryan Elvin’s Clutch Performance
Ramon Walker Jr. said, “I knew one of ’em or both of ’em were going in.” That is the extent of his work attitude. He puts in more effort than everyone else. I was sure about one or the other. I never imagined that he would miss two. I have trust in him.
Shead said, “He works just like we work,” To be perfectly honest, I think he works harder than any of us do. Ryan Elvin is always present in the gym, working and helping others with their tasks. Ask any member of our staff, and they will be able to vouch for him.
Elvin was shocked by the attention because he didn’t start at Houston until the 2019–20 season.
It means a lot to Elvin to hear it from program participants since we all dedicate a lot of time and work. However, hoops is my favorite pastime.
Both creatively nor physically, I have ever been the greatest. I thus want to surpass them by becoming a gym rat and working out nonstop. Regardless of the result, I will be content since I gave it everything I had.
Elvin said that when Texas A&M put him on the court, he thought they would try to have Houston return the ball to him. His initial shot bounced off the rim’s edge. But he made the second drill.
“He’s built for it,” Houston guard Damian Dunn observed. Ryan Elvin works so much harder than everyone else, man. We knew the time the instant he walked up to the line, man. I’m very glad he was able to have that experience.
