Boston Bruins Coach Expresses Disappointment: Players Criticized for Playoff Readiness

933

The Boston Bruins are in a familiar spot as the NHL regular season draws to a close; they are close to the top of the standings yet suffer from a sense of unrealized potential.

Although his team has 98 points, which is tied for second-most points in the league, head coach Jim Montgomery isn’t holding back when discussing his club’s postseason readiness.

Montgomery didn’t hold back when he voiced his displeasure with the team’s postseason preparation after a recent loss to the Philadelphia Flyers and a taxing practice session. Though they have an outstanding 41-16-15 record, the Bruins have shown weaknesses all season long.

With 241 goals scored, the Bruins are now ninth in the league in scoring, seventh in goals against (201), and ninth with a goal difference of +41.

Although these numbers are impressive, Montgomery thinks they might not be sufficient to guarantee a deep postseason run, particularly in light of the team’s track record of failing when it means most.

The Boston Bruins have performed admirably during the regular season but have not won another Stanley Cup since their last triumph in 2011.

The Boston Bruins are in a familiar spot as the NHL regular season draws to a close; they are close to the top of the standings yet suffer from a sense of unrealized potential.

Despite having the best point total in the league at the end of the 2013–14 season, they were ousted in the second round of the playoffs. They advanced to the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals, but the St. Louis Blues triumphed.

The Boston Bruins won the Presidents’ Trophy for most regular-season points but lost in the second round of the playoffs, adding to the disappointment that accompanied the pandemic-affected 2019–2020 season.

Montgomery led his team to its most recent playoff heartbreak last spring. In the opening round of the playoffs in 2022–23, the Bruins took on the Florida Panthers following a record-breaking regular season.

They led the series 3-0, but they suffered a major collapse and lost Game 7 at home in overtime. Montgomery’s remarks are a sobering reminder of the Bruins’ previous mistakes and the challenges that still need to be overcome as the team gets ready for yet another postseason run.

Beyond just being the best team during the regular season, Boston will need to prepare and persevere at a level that has evaded them in previous years if they are to succeed in the playoffs.
