Raheem Mostert: Dolphins Lock In Key Offensive Asset with Contract Extension

Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert has been rewarded with a reworked deal after having his most productive season to date. 

As reported by agent Brett Tessler, the team and player have reached an agreement on a new contract that adds one year to the previous one.

Mostert’s spot on the roster has been secured until the 2025 season. The contract has a maximum value of just over $9 million.

This represents a significant rise from his initially expected earnings for 2024, ensuring the Pro Bowler’s tenure in Miami for a minimum of two additional years.

The 31-year-old was poised to earn $2.75 million this season, a tremendous bargain for the Dolphins considering his outstanding performance last year.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, his cap charge of $3.36 million will be reduced. In 2023, Mostert achieved a career milestone by surpassing 1,000 running yards for the first time. 

Additionally, he showcased his dominance by leading the NFL with an impressive 18 rushing touchdowns.

He added three more passing touchdowns, proving to be a valuable asset in Miami’s top-ranked attack.

Mostert’s Journey from Journeyman to Key Player

Prior to his lengthy time with the 49ers, Mostert was one of the league’s journeymen running backs. 

In San Francisco, he played a rotational role while demonstrating efficiency under Kyle Shanahan’s scheme. 

During his stay in the Bay Area, the former UDFA collaborated with Mike McDaniel, and the two maintained their friendship with Miami in 2022. That year, Mostert rushed for 891 yards and earned a new contract.

The Dolphins maintained a committee style heading into 2023, although youngster De’Von Achane proved deserving of a significant role when fit. 

He averaged 7.8 yards per rush, demonstrating his remarkable speed; Mostert, on the other hand, averaged 4.8 yards per attempt. 

That essentially equals his performance from the previous season, thus despite his age, a renewed commitment should not be viewed as a particularly dangerous move on the team’s part.

In addition to Mostert and Achane, Miami has Jeff Wilson and Salvon Ahmed on contract in the backfield. 

The latter two backs are only on the books until 2024, and neither would suffer a significant dead cap penalty if moved or released this offseason. While the future is unknown, the top of the Dolphins’ RB depth chart will be secure for another two seasons.
