The basketball team at Virginia Tech is poised to see yet another major upheaval as leading point guard Georgia Amoore has stated her decision to use the transfer portal.

The 5-foot-6 Australian point guard had until Monday to decide whether to use the extra season of eligibility given by the COVID-19 program, or to declare for the 2024 WNBA draft, in which she was expected to be selected in the first round.

During her tenure at Virginia Tech, Amoore was instrumental in the program’s rise to national prominence as well as in the ACC. Her contributions on the court were essential in increasing the Hokies’ visibility.

Amoore achieved career-high marks her senior year, averaging 18.8 points and 6.8 assists per game, and was selected twice to the first team of the league.

She also creates a long-lasting legacy as the program’s all-time assists leader. Amoore’s choice to use the transfer portal coincides with a difficult period for the basketball team at Virginia Tech.

The squad had problems this season, most notably playing without Elizabeth Kitley, the three-time ACC player of the year, because of injury, despite their recent accomplishments, which included a historic Final Four appearance in 2023.

Amoore is ready to contribute right away wherever she decides to finish her college education thanks to her expertise and skill set.

Her exit from Virginia Tech creates a big hole in the team and makes her one of the most sought-after players on the transfer market.

The Hokies are going through a transitional era as they attempt to keep their competitive edge in NCAA basketball while coaching changes and roster modifications loom large over the team.
