Canelo Alvarez swiftly fired back at Oscar de la Hoya, the promoter overseeing the career of Jaime Munguia, Canelo’s upcoming rival, after De la Hoya criticized Canelo’s press conferences for lacking excitement akin to his boxing matches.

Notably, Canelo found it noteworthy that De la Hoya opted to express these views when they were not in each other’s presence, choosing instead to convey them from afar.

In an interview with the LA Times concerning his impending showdown with Jaime Munguia scheduled for May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Canelo addressed De la Hoya’s remarks.

It’s significant to highlight that since 2017, when he last fought Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Canelo hasn’t squared off against a fellow Mexican opponent, heightening the anticipation for his clash with Munguia, especially with De la Hoya’s recent remarks intensifying the anticipation.

The tension between the two figures heightened when Alvarez initiated legal action against Golden Boy Promotions, De la Hoya’s firm, in 2020. The lawsuit, filed in the Federal Court in Los Angeles, California, was centered on breach of contract and intentional interference, ultimately leading to Canelo severing his ties with Golden Boy Promotions.

Fast forward to 2024, Canelo is poised to confront an opponent associated with Golden Boy for the first time.

What about facing Benavidez? When asked about opting to face Munguia over the formidable David Benavidez, Canelo emphasized his autonomy.

“I’ve earned my current position through relentless dedication and countless battles,” he stated. “Throughout my career, I’ve taken on numerous legendary fighters, undefeated contenders, and reigning champions.

“For over 13 years, I’ve consistently competed at the pinnacle of the sport. I have the liberty to make my own decisions. Ultimately, my track record speaks volumes.

“I’ve squared off against the likes of Golovkin, Callum Smith, Cotto, Mayweather, Austin Trout, and many others. If you delve into my history, you’ll see that I’ve never backed down from challenges.

“Therefore, I will continue to chart my own course. In the end, my accomplishments and history serve as a testament to my prowess.”
