An audio recording with a racist slur was discovered during a recent police investigation into a string of unsettling incidents that targeted the University of Utah women’s basketball team.
Just prior to the team’s NCAA tournament first-round match, “racial hate crimes” were reported by head coach Lynne Roberts.
According to reports, the incidents started when the squad and their traveling companions strolled from their hotel to a Coeur d’Alene restaurant.
Utah Women’s Basketball Team Confronts Racial Discrimination
When a car passed by, the people inside yelled racist insults at the gathering. After supper, the party was once more the focus of a passing car that revved its engine and the occupants yelled additional threats and racial epithets, which further inflamed the situation.
Coach Roberts, who was taken aback by the events, later made them public while acknowledging that the team struggled to manage the circumstance. The crew moved to a new hotel that was closer to the host city as a result.
Because Spokane, the scheduled host city for the men’s NCAA tournament, had too few hotels, the team had initially taken up residence at the Coeur d’Alene Resort, more than 30 miles east of Spokane.
Gonzaga and the NCAA worked to reserve accommodations for the women’s teams as soon as they became available following the elimination of the initial men’s teams.
