Henry McMaster undergoes knee surgery:
Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina had a minor, elective knee surgery on Thursday morning in response to a tennis injury he had two years prior, according to a statement from the governor’s office.
According to his office, McMaster, who is currently the third-oldest governor in the nation at 76 years old, tore his meniscus in 2022 while playing tennis with his wife, Peggy McMaster.
According to the statement from the governor’s orthopedist, Dr. Jeffrey Guy, the treatment was planned to “correct a cartilage injury.”
Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette took temporary control of executive action after McMaster was put under general anesthesia for the approximately 30-minute procedure. The South Carolina Constitution states that in the event of an emergency or temporary incapacity of the governor, the lieutenant governor may assume the governor’s duties.
The governor’s office said she was informed about the procedure on Wednesday.
Guy reports that McMaster intends to resume his usual routine by Thursday afternoon and anticipates experiencing “no post-procedure limitations.”
During a small operation in December, McMaster received treatment for atrial fibrillation, a form of abnormal heartbeat. After a battery of tests, his cardiologist, Dr. Amy Rawl Epps, reported that everything else seemed normal.
In April 2022, he also had a shorter, 10-minute surgery to correct an abnormal heartbeat. According to the governor’s office, doctors discovered the problem when the governor was first receiving treatment for the meniscus tear he had surgery on in 2024.
After defeating former US Representative Joe Cunningham in the 2022 election, McMaster is serving his second and last term.
