An 18-year-old female was shot dead at DSU Campus (Delaware State University); it remained closed on Sunday and Monday after the incident.
According to Dover Police, they got a notification of a shooting near the campus Warren Franklin Residential Hall around 1:40 a.m., and our officers left for the location quickly. At the scene, they find an 18-year-old woman who is said to be from Wilmington had been shot in the upper body.
According to the information, the woman was not a registered student at the university concerned, and she was taken to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, immediately, where she died due to her injuries. Her identity is still away from us as not yet been released by the police.
University officials said the woman and possibly another woman were visiting a student on campus at the time of the incident. Further, the officials said that the gunman was last seen heading towards College Road.
Master Corporal Ryan Schmid, in his statement with Dover police, said that “the only thing that we can release right now is that something happened in the area of that residence hall which led to shots being fired”. Further, he said that we don’t believe that an 18-year-old woman was involved in anything. It seems like the cause of, unfortunately, for lack of a better term, in the crossfire.
The DSU parent, Deirdre Foreman, said she came to know about the shooting through a text from the school. She came to the premises to check on the son who is a senior at the university. Moreover, Foreman said, we were just talking about back when we were in college, and things were not like that as gun violence, and nowadays, it’s so out of control.
On the Dover PD’s website, the Delaware State University said that, The DSU Police Department and University officials will ensure that they will continue to take all necessary measures and actions to check the health and well-being of our campus community. Moreover, counseling services are now available in the Tubman Laws Hall housing office. The premises are closed, all events are suspended, and police patrols have been increased, with no visiting permitted today.
