Chicago Police Officer Shot
Off-duty Chicago police officer Luis Huesca shot to death in Gage Park. This 30-year-old officer was returning home from work at about 3 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 56th Street.
As per a police spokesperson’s statement, an officer responded to a shotSpotter alert at about 2.55 a.m. and found Officer Luis with multiple gunshot wounds.
Huesca was returning home from his work in the police uniform when he was shot. After reaching the spot, the wounded officer was immediately taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was proclaimed dead.
Outside the hospital, there was a team of reporters hours after the incident, and Snelling told them that Huesca had been in the police department for six years and was just two days away from his 31st birthday.
“We lost one of our own today,” said Snelling. “He was just a great officer and a great human being”.
In the statement, Snelling did not confirm the shooting happened during a carjacking, but he said Huesca’s vehicle had been stolen. Till now, no arrests have been reported.
As per the reports, roughly 30 gunshots were fired during the incident, and it is not clear whether Huesca returned fire, according to law enforcement sources. His stolen Toyota was later recovered nearby. Moreover, his gun and badge were not presented at the scene.
In a letter to police department members, Snelling said Huesca was assigned to the office of Area 2 Deputy Chief Senora Ben.
“There will be sadness, anger, and grief as we ask how the life of our fellow brother could be taken in this reprehensible act of violence.” he added further that “our focus is right now on his family and loved ones who are going through this hard time. We are also focused on apprehending whoever is responsible for the loss”.
As per the sources, Huesca attended the police academy with Officer Andres Vasquez Lasso, who was shot in the line of duty just a year ago. One of the residents near the incident place said that he heard police sirens but didn’t bother as the place is pretty quiet.
