Investigation underway after freight train carrying fuel derails near Arizona-New Mexico border
Federal authorities are looking into a situation where a freight train carrying fuel derailed near the Arizona-New Mexico border, causing a significant fire, leading to evacuations, and road closures.
A BNSF freight train derailed around 1:45 p.m. MT on Friday close to Manuelito, New Mexico, as reported by the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB mentioned that initial reports indicate that at least 22 cars, including several propane tank cars, were involved in the derailment.
According to the NTSB, two of the tank cars caught fire, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The Federal Railroad Administration is spearheading the investigation into the incident, with FRA investigators and a team of NTSB investigators en route to the scene to assess the situation and examine the train and equipment.
The train was transporting gasoline and non-odorous propane, as stated by New Mexico State Police. Following the derailment, thick black smoke could be observed as the train cars burned.
BNSF mentioned in a statement that their staff is actively working to clear the area safely. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation by the freight railroad.
