Authorities claimed that during a Saturday night altercation that resulted in the death of a suspect, three Atlanta police officers were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

During a press conference, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that officers responded at 5:15 p.m. to a complaint of an armed man in a commercial area on Fairbanks Street and saw a man on Desoto Avenue with a knife and a handgun.

“During that encounter, there was a struggle, there was gunfire that resulted in three of our officers being injured. It also resulted in the death of the individual that was armed with the handgun,” Schierbaum said.

The deceased man was not identified by the police department right away. Police, according to Schierbaum, did not think anyone else was involved.

Police patrol cars were used to take the three cops to Grady Memorial Hospital. Three officers were shot: one took a grazing wound, one took a bullet to the leg, and one took a round to the shoulder. According to Schierbaum, two of the officers were anticipated to have surgery.

He indicated that the investigation into the shooting will be headed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The hospitalized police, according to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, were “alert, conscious, and breathing.”

“Once again you see that guns are causing harm in our communities,” Dickens said during the news conference outside the hospital, noting he and other officials were headed to a fundraiser for the police department when they were informed about the shooting.
