At least 19 killed in tornado-spawning storms sweeping central US

Reports indicate that Hopkins County, Kentucky, experienced severe weather Sunday night, resulting in injuries and significant damage. Sheriff Matt Sanderson mentioned that the affected areas are primarily Charleston and Barnsley in the county.

Hopkins County is situated approximately 90 miles from Warren County, where Bowling Green is located. The National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky, plans to dispatch teams to assess the storm’s impact on various regions of the state on Monday.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is scheduled to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET to discuss the storm’s aftermath and provide updates on the state’s response. Severe storms are ongoing in parts of the Southeast and Appalachian Mountains on Monday morning, with some areas under tornado watches until 9 a.m. ET, potentially experiencing intense tornadoes, 80 mph gusts, and large hail.

From New York to Alabama, there is a level 2 out of 5 storm threat on Monday, posing risks of damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes. Cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC, are at higher risk for tornadoes.

Storms are forecasted to move through Atlanta by late morning on Monday. By the afternoon, the storms are expected to reach the Northeast, potentially impacting major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Baltimore.

Northeastern cities, including Philadelphia and Baltimore, face the greatest threat of heavy rainfall, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible.

Central Alabama is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 a.m. ET on Monday morning, with the potential for 70 mph gusts, large hail, and tornadoes.
