RAPPER BROTHER MARQUIS, a member of Miami hip-hop group 2 Live Crew, has passed away at the age of 58.
The group’s statement on social media announced, “Brother Marquis of the 2 Live crew has gone to the upper room.” DJ Debo, the group’s manager, confirmed Marquis’ death to Rolling Stone. The cause of death has not been disclosed yet.
As a part of 2 Live Crew with Fresh Kid Ice, Mr. Mixx, and Uncle Luke, Brother Marquis made history with their controversial 1989 album As Nasty As They Wanna Be. The album achieved significant sales and became the first to be legally labeled as obscene by a federal judge a year after its release. This led to legal issues, including the arrest of a record store owner and two members. However, the Circuit Court of Appeals later overturned the decision.
Marquis, also known as Mark D. Ross, was featured on the group’s LP Is What We Are, which included the hit single “We Want Some Pussy.” The group was known for creating parodies of various artists, leading to legal battles like the one with Roy Orbison over the song “Oh, Pretty Woman,” which reached the Supreme Court and established the legal principle that commercial parody qualifies as fair use.
After the group disbanded in the Nineties, Ross collaborated with Ice-T on the track “99 Problems” from the Home Invasion album.
