Tucupita Marcano Under Investigation: Know More Here
Major League Baseball is looking into San Diego Padres shortstop Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball games, a league representative told CNN.
The Wall Street Journal broke the story first, claiming that the alleged betting occurred during Marcano’s time as a Pittsburgh Pirate and when he was injured.
In 2024, Marcano is still listed as injured, but he is now a Padres player.
MLB players are not allowed to bet on baseball; however, they are allowed to bet on other sports.
CNN has contacted representatives of Marcano for comments. In response, the MLB Players Association remained silent.
The Padres issued a statement Monday saying the team is “aware of an active investigation by Major League Baseball regarding a matter when the player in question was a member of another organization and not affiliated with the San Diego Padres. We will not have any further comment until the investigative process has been completed.”
Senior Vice President of Communications Brian Warecki stated in a statement that the Pirates are “aware of the matter that’s under investigation” and “are fully cooperating.”
“We will refrain from further comment at this time,” Warecki said.
According to the Journal, which cited anonymous sources, four more players might face penalties from MLB for betting on baseball games when they were in the minor leagues.
A player who is found guilty of placing bets on baseball games featuring teams other than their own might face a one-year suspension from MLB. A player who bets on their team during a game faces a permanent suspension.
Marcano has not yet appeared in a game for the Padres this season despite having a career batting average of.217 in 149 big league games.
