BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) – The family of 36-year-old Marsha Hernandez is in shock and searching for answers after her tragic death while in custody in Bastrop County in early April.
Hernandez, who lived in Smithville, had just started serving a six-month jail sentence following a plea deal related to a 2021 controlled substance charge. Unfortunately, just a few days into her jail term, something went terribly wrong.
The exact cause of Hernandez’s passing remains unclear, as investigations by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office and state authorities are ongoing.
Her mother, Kimberly Reeves, expressed that Hernandez had been asking for help before her death, but it seems that Bastrop County did not respond to her pleas.
Describing her daughter as caring and devoted to her children, Kimberly Reeves shared how devastating the loss has been for their family, especially with the lack of information from Bastrop County adding to their pain.
Hernandez’s father, Bryon Reeves, acknowledged her long-standing medical issues, including multiple surgeries for spinal problems. However, he emphasized that there were no immediate life-threatening conditions when she entered custody in Bastrop.
Bryon Reeves expressed his frustration, stating that it’s tragic for his daughter to be in a situation where she should have received help instead. He highlighted Marsha’s caring nature, always bringing out the best in others and looking after everyone around her.
