According to authorities, a 17-year-old Chinese badminton player who was deemed “outstanding” passed away on July 1 from cardiac arrest after passing out on the court during an Indonesian event. During a match against Japan’s Kazuma Kawano late Sunday at the Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Zhang Zhijie unexpectedly became unwell.

Zhang Zhijie Cause of Death:

Officials said on Monday that a young Chinese badminton player, 17, unfortunately died after going into cardiac arrest during a tournament in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Late on Sunday night, Zhang Zhijie was playing in the Asia Junior Championships versus Kazuma Kawano of Japan when he unexpectedly passed out on the court during the opening game.

Zhang tragically passed away later that evening after receiving emergency care at the scene and being taken quickly by ambulance to a neighboring hospital. Attempts to revive him were made repeatedly but without success.

At a news conference, Broto Happy, a spokesman for the Badminton Association of Indonesia, stated, “Medical conclusions… indicated that the victim experienced sudden cardiac arrest,” according to AFP.

The spokeswoman stated that Zhang’s parents were on their way to the city to pick up his remains.

The spokesman defended the conduct of the medical staff and the event planners after a video appeared on social media that seemed to show a hesitant reaction to the teenager falling face-first onto the court.

He clarified that the medical personnel had to wait for the referee’s approval before entering the court.

“A gifted player has left the badminton world,” a statement from Badminton Asia and the PBSI said.

Zhang’s Passion:

Zhang took an early interest in badminton, having picked up the game while still in kindergarten. The previous year, he was chosen to play for China’s national young squad, demonstrating his talent and commitment.

Zhang proved his good on the court when he won the Dutch Junior International in the singles division earlier this year. The juvenile badminton circuit holds this competition in the highest respect.

When the Chinese badminton organization heard about Zhang’s departure, they expressed deep sadness and grief. They stated, “Zhang Zhijie loved badminton and was an outstanding national youth team athlete.”

On Monday, the team competition held a minute of quiet in remembrance of a deceased athlete. Before the Chinese team resumed the tournament, they wore black armbands to show sadness. China won 3-0 over Taiwan to claim the victory.

The double Olympian from India, PV Sindhu, expressed her deep sadness and called Zhang’s death “absolutely heartbreaking” after learning of it.

On X, Sindhu stated, “I offer my deepest condolences to Zhang’s family during this devastating time.” Today, the world has lost an exceptional talent.

The governing body of the Badminton World Federation expressed its sadness at the passing of Zhang Zhijie, an up-and-coming player.

It added, “We extend our sincere condolences to his family, his teammates, the Chinese Badminton Association, and the entire community.”
