Captain of Citrus County Fire Training Killed in Crystal River Boat Collision

According to officials, a training captain with Citrus County Fire Rescue passed away on Thursday night in Crystal River following an off-duty watercraft accident. According to the agency, 42-year-old Michael Fletcher passed away during the Fourth of July boating mishap. A boat struck Fletcher’s vessel just before 11 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Following an off-duty boat collision near Crystal River on Thursday night, a training captain with Citrus County Fire Rescue passed away, according to officials.

Michael Fletcher, 42, passed away during the Fourth of July boating mishap, according to the agency. Just before 11 p.m. on Thursday, according to the (FWC), a boat struck Fletcher’s ship.

Investigators claim that Fletcher was thrown off his boat at that point. Officials from the FWC reported that he was subsequently pulled dead from the sea. Boaters were advised to use great care if they were in the vicinity while divers from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene.

The FWC released a statement saying, “During this trying time, our prayers and thoughts are with the victim’s friends and family.” “This is an active investigation.”

According to CCFR authorities, Fletcher has worked with Marion County Fire Rescue for around 20 years and six years with the agency. They said he was an outstanding leader throughout the CCFR’s firefighter training.

Citrus County Fire Chief Craig Stevens remarked, “Captain Michael Fletcher was a pillar of our department, known for his dedication and compassion.” His passing saddens everyone who had the honor of working with him.

In a statement on Fletcher’s passing, Citrus County Administrator Steve Howard said, among other things, “I extend my deepest and utmost condolences to Captain Fletcher’s family and each Citrus County Fire Rescue member on the loss of a brother.”
