Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officer Dies In Crash
Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter, a 45-year-old member of the Michigan State Police (MSP), tragically lost his life following a traffic stop accident on Friday, September 13.
A Tragic Loss on Duty
Kerstetter joined MSP’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division in January 2023 and graduated from the 26th Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School in May. He was assigned to the Metro North Post, where he served until the fatal crash. Colonel James F. Grady II, Director of the Michigan State Police, expressed deep sorrow at the loss. “We are heartbroken about this loss. Traffic enforcement is dangerous work. The dedication of our officers and troopers to keep the public safe on our roads is commendable. Even in death, Officer Kerstetter continues to serve others through the gift of life,” Grady said, referencing Kerstetter’s organ donation.
The Crash and Investigation
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning while Officer Kerstetter was conducting a traffic stop on northbound I-75 near Dix in Lincoln Park. Kerstetter was seated in his patrol vehicle with his seatbelt fastened when a Ford Explorer struck the median wall and continued down the freeway, ultimately colliding with Kerstetter’s vehicle. The impact pushed his patrol car into the rear of a semi-truck. Officer Kerstetter was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later. The driver of the Ford Explorer did not survive the crash, while the semi-truck driver emerged unscathed. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Explorer lost control before striking Kerstetter’s vehicle. The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the tragic incident.
A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
Officer Kerstetter leaves behind a wife and three children. His death underscores the inherent risks faced by law enforcement officers, particularly those working in traffic enforcement. Officer Kerstetter’s dedication to public safety, even during his brief tenure with the MSP, is a testament to his commitment to serving his community.
As the investigation continues, the Michigan State Police family and the community mourn the loss of a dedicated officer. Officer Kerstetter’s sacrifice serves as a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and the courage they display in their commitment to public safety.
Michigan State Police have yet to release additional details regarding the investigation, but Officer Kerstetter’s impact will continue to be felt within the force and his community. The family, fellow officers, and friends are united in honoring his memory and legacy.
