CUMBERLAND: An injury from a car hitting a pedestrian resulted in the death of a man from Rhode Island. Police Chief Matthew Benson reports that the Cumberland Police Department was notified of a car crash involving a pedestrian near the intersection of Mendon Road and Highland Corporate Drive on Tuesday afternoon at around 2:45 p.m.

The pedestrian, subsequently identified as Cumberland resident Joseph Arribas, 24, was crossing Highland Corporate Drive near the crosswalk when he was hit by a car that was turning left from Route 99 onto Highland Corporate Drive. Both the driver involved in the collision and a few onlookers who wanted to help stayed at the scene.

Death due to severe injuries

After receiving medical attention from Cumberland Emergency Medical Services staff, Arribas was sent to Rhode Island Hospital in a serious state. The car’s driver cooperated with Cumberland Police and didn’t need medical attention while they were there.

Sadly, Arribas lost his life as a result of his wounds during the course of Wednesday night. Many who claimed to have known Arribas described him as a kind and amiable man.

Detectives and accident reconstruction officers from Cumberland Police are currently investigating the collision. “On behalf of the Cumberland Police Department, I extend my sincere condolences to Mr. Arribas’ family, friends, and loved ones,” Chief Benson said.

I also want to thank the Cumberland EMS responders who were on the scene for their amazing work in getting the crash victim emergency medical attention.
