Santa Monica: On Thursday, a homeless man was taken into custody after he allegedly strangled a man who was fishing at Santa Monica Beach. The Santa Monica Police Department identified the suspect as 31-year-old John Broeksmit.

All About The Victim

The victim, a 28-year-old guy from West Hollywood, was abruptly attacked from behind on September 19 while he was fishing at the waterline. According to the authorities, the man suffered neck injuries after Broeksmit allegedly strangled him. For medical attention, he was taken to the hospital. Before the police could arrive, the suspect left the area. After police searched the beach, they found and detained Broeksmit based on the victim’s description. The suspect, according to the authorities, is originally from Illinois and is currently homeless.

All About The Suspect

He was arrested several times in California in 2024 on charges of interfering with a fire alarm, possessing a firearm on school property, and public intoxication. On September 15, he was most recently taken into custody on charges of public drunkenness and burglary. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a single count of attempted murder against Broeksmit on September 23. He is still being jailed under $2 million bail by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
