The sole vice presidential debate scheduled before the November election will pit relative newbies to the national political scene, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio against Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota on Tuesday. Three weeks have passed since the sole scheduled debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Although Walz, Harris’ running mate, has a lengthy political history, most voters outside of Minnesota were not familiar with him prior to joining the Democratic ticket. The author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” Vance, was elected to government for the first time in 2022—less than two years before Trump chose him to be his running partner. Here are some facts regarding the discussion.
When does the vice presidential debate begin and end?
On Tuesday, the debate gets underway at 9 p.m. ET. It will run 90 minutes — the same duration as the two presidential debates — and end at 10:30 p.m. ET.
The vice presidential debate is being moderated by whom?
Moderators of “Face the Nation” and chief international affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan will moderate the discussion, along with managing editor and host of “CBS Evening News” Norah O’Donnell.
The vice presidential debate is supposed to be where?
In New York City, the debate is being held at the CBS Broadcast Center. Trump had lived in the Democratic bastion of New York City his whole life, but in 2019 he moved his primary residence and voting registration to Palm Beach, Florida, the location of his Mar-a-Lago club.
Despite losing the state to President Biden by more than 20 points in 2020, Trump asserted at a recent campaign gathering on Long Island that he could win New York this year.
“Some folks in Washington asked, ‘What do you mean New York?’ when I told them I was heading up to New York to give a campaign address. No one can ever win, including you. Republicans are unable to prevail. “I can win New York, and we can win New York,” I declared. We’ll prevail,” Trump declared.
What guidelines apply to the debate?
A ninety-minute discussion with two four-minute commercial breaks was agreed upon by both campaigns. During the breaks, campaign employees are not permitted to speak with the candidates. There will be no audience – a precaution previously employed during the two previous presidential debates. The moderators will introduce the candidates by incumbent party at the beginning of the event, starting with Walz. There won’t be any introductory remarks.
On the left side of the stage, which is what the audience would see on the right, Walz will be positioned behind the lectern. Vance will be at the podium to the left of the screens but on the right side of the stage. Candidates will have two minutes to answer questions and two minutes to respond; they are not permitted to bring props or prewritten notes to the stage. They can make rebuttals for one minute. Candidates may be granted one more minute to complete their conversation at the moderators’ discretion.
While CBS News has the power to switch off the microphones, unlike the presidential debates, a candidate’s microphone will not be muffled during their opponent’s speech. On Thursday, Vance emerged victorious in an online coin flip and chose to go second with his concluding remarks. Closing statements from each contender will be allowed a maximum of two minutes. There will be no advance sharing of subjects or questions with the campaigns.
