John Amos, a beloved actor from ‘Good Times,’ passes away at 84

John Amos, who was most remembered for his time on the television sitcom Good Times, sadly died. According to a recent statement from his son, the actor, who was most recognized for his television role on “Good Times,” passed suddenly. At eighty-four, the actor went to be with God. On Tuesday, October 1, John’s son Kelly Christopher Amos confirmed that his father had died on August 21, some months before. Amos had a prosperous five-decade acting career after retiring from football.

In a statement, Kelly expressed his deep sorrow at learning of his father’s transition. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he was loved by everyone everywhere and had the most tender, priceless heart. Many people think of him as their TV father.

John had an excellent life, and his legacy will endure thanks to his remarkable film and television acting career. The former nominee for a Primetime Emmy Award has fifty years of expertise in the entertainment sector. That being said, his initial goal was to play football professionally. After playing football for Colorado State University, the New Jersey native signed an American Football League free agency contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. He eventually quit playing to focus on acting.

As Gordy Howard, the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, John began to receive recognition by the early 1970s. He was chosen to play James Evans Sr. on the television series Good Times in 1973. John, however, had a difficult time on the job site. He frequently argued with the series’ creators over how African Americans were portrayed. Good Times let John go after three seasons. In an interview from 2017, John detailed his disagreements with the writers.

John recounted his issues with the Good Times writers in a 2017 interview, pointing out the dearth of African-American writers and the harsh sentiments they had shown in their writing. He argued that it was not a typical occurrence in the community, casting doubt on the characters’ authenticity and accomplishments. Since then, John has been cast in several movies and TV shows.
