Fatal Confrontation in East Union Township

According to court documents, the argument between the father and son began when John F. Gustites was awakened by the sound of his son chasing a cat in his room between 8 and 9 a.m. The elder Gustites entered the room to retrieve the cat when his son demanded the family car. This sparked a heated argument that quickly spiraled out of control. The father reportedly left the room and returned with a .357 Magnum revolver.

As tensions escalated, John A. Gustites grabbed a screwdriver from his bedpost and moved toward his father. In the ensuing altercation, the father allegedly shot his son in the head, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound. Despite the severity of the situation, John F. Gustites did not immediately call 911, leaving his son dead for 12 hours before contacting authorities.

Delayed Response and Confession

Instead of seeking help, the elder Gustites spent hours watching religious videos, contemplating his next steps. According to court documents, he later told investigators that he considered taking his own life in the aftermath of the shooting. It was only after these hours of watching religious content that he finally decided to contact the police at around 8 p.m. that evening.

When officers from the East Union Township Police Department, led by Chief Chris Dimmick, arrived at the scene, they found John F. Gustites calmly sitting on the porch. He was arrested without incident. Inside the home, police discovered John A. Gustites’ body in the bedroom, where he had died from a single gunshot wound to the face. The father admitted to the shooting but claimed that he didn’t remember pulling the trigger. However, he acknowledged that he must have fired the fatal shot after hearing his son make a “gurgling” sound, indicating that he was gravely injured.

Legal Proceedings and Upcoming Court Date

John F. Gustites has been charged with multiple offenses, including murder, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and simple assault. He is currently being held at Schuylkill County Prison, with bail set at $250,000. His initial court appearance is scheduled for October 10, according to online court records.
