The search for Suzanne Simpson, a missing mother from Olmos Park, Texas, has entered its tenth day, with authorities now confirming that the mission has shifted from a rescue to a recovery operation.

Law enforcement officials are focusing their efforts on a landfill in Southeast Bexar County, where they believe Simpson’s body may be found.

The Olmos Park Police Department, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, has stated that evidence gathered from their investigation, along with witness statements, has led them to this landfill as the most likely location to recover her remains. The police expressed confidence in the likelihood of finding Simpson’s body there. Cadets from the San Antonio Police Department, along with other law enforcement personnel, are assisting in the extensive search effort.

The Incident and Ongoing Investigation

Simpson was last seen on October 6 following a domestic dispute with her husband, Brad Simpson, at their home in Olmos Park. Just days later, on October 9, Brad Simpson, 53, was arrested in Kendall County while traveling along Interstate 10. He has since been charged with family violence offenses, and investigators have revealed that his arrest may be linked to his wife’s disappearance. In addition to the charges related to domestic violence, Brad Simpson is also facing federal firearm charges. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) released an affidavit detailing that Simpson had been in illegal possession of a short-barreled rifle. His arrest and subsequent charges have drawn significant attention as the search for his missing wife continues.

Methods Used in Landfill Searches

While authorities continue their search, officials from TEXSAR, a nonprofit search and rescue organization, have offered insights into the complex process of searching a landfill for a missing person. Although TEXSAR is not directly involved in this case, their experience in similar operations sheds light on the methods being employed.

Jeff Conrad, director of field operations at TEXSAR, explained that one of the primary methods used in landfill searches is to load sections of the debris into dump trucks, spread it out in a separate area, and then comb through the materials systematically. “You work through that section, then move on to the next,” Conrad said, describing how each part of the landfill is carefully examined.

Canine teams trained in detecting human remains are also employed in such searches, along with GPS systems and other ground and wilderness search-and-rescue techniques. These efforts, combined with law enforcement’s determination, provide a structured approach in hopes of bringing closure to the case.
