When Brian Topping passed away from a heroin overdose, his grand preparations to welcome the arrival of a new family member were abruptly interrupted. Brian’s mother, Paula Malin, stated, “He was organizing this birthday celebration and even knew what kind of cake he wanted.” Their family was thrilled and anticipating a new baby, but they were shortly to face a lifetime of suffering. “It’s a pain I cannot even describe it hurts deep down in my soul,” said Malin.
According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, Brian passed away in October 2023 from an overdose. Gracie, Topping’s infant niece, was denied the opportunity to ever meet her uncle Brian. “It’s such a shame that Brian didn’t get to meet her he would have been such a wonderful uncle she needed him and he is not coming back not here on this earth,” Malin stated.
Malin claimed that although her kid had a mental disability, he was the most intelligent person she had ever met. “Anyone that ever met Brian would tell you he was the kindest soul and was everyone’s friend,” added Malin. Although Malin acknowledged that she was powerless to prevent her son’s death, she hopes to use Brian’s experience to improve the lives of others. Brian will always be 35.
“Never say it can never happen to me because this is a crisis situation,” Malin stated. “I can’t save my son but I hope this touches the lives of others because I don’t want any mother to go through what we have been through.” Matthew Roop, the man accused of murder for selling narcotics in this overdose death, is scheduled to appear in court in December.
