A couple reported missing earlier on Thursday has been located by Maine Game Wardens. Pamela Helmstadter, 72, was found alive, while the body of her husband, John Helmstadter, 82, was discovered nearby.

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, wardens found Pamela more than a mile away from their home in Alexander at around 2:30 p.m. One of the couple’s dogs was found with her. John’s body was located approximately 200 yards from where Pamela was discovered.

Pamela explained that the couple had gone for a walk in the woods with their dogs on Sunday when John fell and was unable to get back up. Neither of them had a cellphone, and Pamela attempted to return to their home to get help but became disoriented in the woods.

A neighbor, who noticed the couple’s absence after one of their dogs returned home alone, alerted the authorities. The Maine Game Wardens began searching for them on Wednesday night.

Pamela, suffering from hypothermia, was taken to Calais Community Hospital. Her current condition has not been disclosed. The cause of John Helmstadter’s death is unclear, and it has not been confirmed if an autopsy will be conducted.

Further details remain unavailable as of Thursday evening.
