Florida Teen Surfer Survives Shark Attack ‘Out of Nowhere’

Florida teen surfer Teddy Wittemann, 16, was enjoying the waves when he experienced an unexpected shark attack. While surfing in storm-stirred waters, a 6-foot bullshark bit him out of nowhere, latching onto the inside of his arm. Teddy recalls the moment vividly: “I felt this pressure on my arm and saw the shark along the side of my body. I knew exactly what was going on.” Teddy had fallen off his surfboard when the shark struck. Despite the pain and fear, he managed to paddle back to shore, where his friends quickly came to his aid.

The Importance of Support

Reflecting on the incident, Teddy emphasized how crucial it was to have a support system during such a traumatic experience. “I think it’s important that people know to be there for somebody if they’re going through this kind of incident,” he said. “Having friends and family around helped me a lot.” While the attack was frightening, Teddy’s determination to recover and continue doing what he loves remains strong. Despite the injury, he is already looking ahead to getting back on his surfboard.

Undeterred Dreams

Teddy’s passion for surfing runs deep. Surfing is more than a hobby for him—it’s a way of life. He surfs daily and dreams of becoming a professional surfer. The shark attack, though alarming, has not diminished his desire to pursue his passion. “I love surfing. I do it every day, it’s what I grew up doing, and I don’t want a little… well, not a little bite, but a little hiccup to throw me off,” Teddy said with resolve. His father, Ted Wittemann, shares the same sentiment, fully supporting his son’s return to the waves. “It’s such a big part of Teddy’s life,” he explained. “There’s no hesitation. I encourage him to face those fears.”

Facing Fear and Moving Forward

For Teddy, the shark attack represents a challenge, not a roadblock. His determination to overcome the trauma and get back to surfing reflects his passion and resilience. He is already preparing to surf again, perhaps even using the same board that was with him during the attack.

For now, Teddy is focused on healing, but his sights remain set on his future in surfing. With the encouragement of his family, friends, and his inner drive, he refuses to let the attack derail his dreams of becoming a pro surfer. “I’ll be back out there,” Teddy confidently declared, undeterred by the encounter that could have easily shaken his resolve.
